Learning Outcome 5

Learning Outcome 5: “Analyze and produce creative works that express the richness of the human experience.”

The essay I chose for Learning Outcome 5 is another work from MAJ Eichholz’s “ERH 331W – Aesthetics” class and is an analysis of two works; using a “Tolstoyan Perspective” understood through reading Leo Tolstoy’s What is Art?, I analyzed one of my all time favorite paintings, Van Gogh’s Night Café. The Night Café, a work intended to make the viewer sense feelings of anxiety and disorientation through use of extremely contrasting colors, perspectives, and the characters in the painting looking directly towards the viewer, in my opinion would be constituted as “good art” from a Tolstoyan outlook, being that the artist’s intent is clearly conveyed to the viewer without being overly complex. Though I included a work from my Aesthetics class already, I had to include this essay in my showcase because it was by far one of my favorite essays to write. A bit of an art geek (being in the Art History and Visual Culture Minor!), there was never a dull moment in writing this essay and it perfectly aligns with Learning Outcome 5’s criteria.
