The store smells wonderful, the people are friendly, and it has everything you could ever want in stock. At Sunday’s Child, anything goes, from live finches to beautiful hand-made jewelry. Stepping into this business, it’s easy to forget the time as you wander around the store, getting lost in its endless inventory.
The owner, Lucia Owens, knows that owning a business is more of a people skill than a book skill. Ms. Owens creates a rapport with all of her customers, and before you know it, you feel like a close family friend. A native of Charelston, South Carolina, Ms. Owens first moved to Lexington with her husband when he took a job as a lead fundraiser for Sigma Nu. At first, the plan was to only stay for a few years, but when Lucia noticed that the Owens’ were here to stay, she decided to open up shop. “I had worked at just about every other business in town, so why not start my own?”, she said. When thinking about what kind of store to open, she remembered her days in Charleston. “Everything store sold the same stuff. I didn’t want to be like that.” So Ms. Owens started out small, but expanded her inventory rapidly. She now hosts a wide variety of stock, from greeting cards to gag gifts. It’s a store that truly reflects its owner. Ms. Owens is a gem of a business owner, and someone who really cares about Lexington. “I love this business community because we all try to support each other,” she says. “There’s no real conflict between the stores. We all want to see each other succeed.”
Ms. Owens and Sunday’s Child just celebrated 20 years in the Lexington community. She says that she has no plans to expand the store, although she’s had offers. “I’ve had several people approach me about franchising, but I wouldn’t like it,” she says. “I love the feel of the store as it is right now. It’s got a real sense of community.” It’s this community that keeps customers coming back time after time. Ms. Owens says that she now has customers she knew as children that are coming back with children of their own. “It’s become a generational thing,” she says. “It’s nice to keep it going.” With a bright future, and endless customer support, it seems as if Sunday’s Child will be around for a long time to come.
