Out of the three essays that I have composed over the past semester, I have decided to write a revision plan on the first one, which was titled “Portrait of a Writer.” This essay was the first English paper that I have composed in college. My overall grade showed for it; it was the lowest grade I have ever received on a paper. To be honest, the reason it was my worst one despite the fact that it was my first was probably because I did not receive a lot of feedback from the instructor. Sure, I turned in rough drafts, but I failed to meet up with him and did not walk to his office to discuss the paper. I was lazy to sum it all up. I believe that one of the reasons that it failed was the structure of the essay. After reading it over yesterday, I realized that the paragraphs did not flow, I did not have a wrong thesis, and the words used in the composition were elementary. I failed to use adult vocabulary. Besides the choppiness of the essay, I failed to reread the paper after writing it. I did not incorporate the advice given to me by the peer revisers and the teacher into my final draft. I also only visited the writing center one time after they told me to visit at least twice. To sum everything up, I thought it was a good paper, so I did not waste my time on it. I thought that college writing was comparable to high school, and I paid the price for it. I am thankful for taking Mr. Hamilton’s writing course; it helped open my eyes to college writing and also forced me to become a better writer.
