2/15/18 Teaching Writing Response Question 2 (pg. 86-108)

What do teachers need to know about cognition?

After reading this chapter in Lindeman, I found the idea of cognition and how it differs with each person, an interesting topic. I am a psychology major and part of our curriculum is knowing the different ways in which people can understand the world around them. This perception of each individuals experiences influence them and how they function in everyday circumstances. With that being said, Lindeman mentions the different ways in which people understand writing. She explains the idea of perception versus Conception. Similarly it was a difference between seeing and thinking. This explains a typical difference in student learning. Some students may be more visual learners, whereas others may be more logical in how they understand things. This difference answers the question regarding teachers… They must know all the diverse perspectives of cognition. Or at least, know that there are many different sides to learning so that they can relate and be the most effective with their capabilities in the classroom. Lindeman talks about how many different people speak different languages and therefore, have different contexts. With this idea, teachers have a challenge they must take up to fulfill this language and cognitive barrier between student and teacher. There is definitely an ongoing relationship amongst the student and the teacher and it starts and grows with the understanding cognition.
