The biggest change in Rhetoric was the transition from the collapse of Ancient Athens and becoming the Roman Empire. This established a strict leadership that repressed rhetorical tradition. This in turn, shaped or expanded rhetoric into a more restricted practice that centered around court room and judicial interpretations. Although rhetoric became more political, there was a new emerging expansion of rhetoric through Augustine later on. Augustine had a close involvement with the catholic church and christianity. He essentially became the bridge to fill in the gap of Rhetoric and christianity. This allowed more uses to defend the church and strengthen it in that aspect. Throughout medieval history and even the Roman Empire, rhetoric was shaped and changed in many ways due to the emerging leadership and powerful influences of that time.
