In this Interview with Deliverance Director John Boorman he goes into why it would be impossible to make Deliverance in this day and age. You would think the reason for this is because of the brutal scenes and stereotypes but you would be wrong. He mentions about how making the movie was done so in an unsafe manner! nothing at all about stereotypes or about the cringe-worthy assault scene. To me that really surprises and scares me. This Director had a real opportunity to talk about issues the movie had and made for the people in Appalachia, but he instead used it to talk about filming standards and how the 70s was the time where you didn’t give a shit about safety. Now yes, he’s the director, not the author. He was worried more about the shot and making the book come alive and looking good. I grant that. but it seems as though he simply avoided talking about the controversial issues at hand. Perhaps there 8is a reason. Perhaps it is just a matter of looking too deep and simply just taking it for what it is. Who knows, other than it is still as classic to this day.
