Explanatory Essay (Research Essay)

For the final essay, I began by searching for a research question that I could answer based off of my past experiences. My main source was the Writing About Writing textbook, where I found a variety of topics that I could write my essay about. One research question stuck out to me in particular: “How does what they’re writing about impact a writer’s process?”. I also sought out to answer two more questions in my paper: “Do different subjects or genres require different processes, and do some subjects make writing more difficult than other subjects do?”. I’ve had different accounts and experiences with all three of these questions, so I felt that I could provide a reliable response to the prompt.

After determining my research question, I began to plan out my essay. I decided it’d be best to split my essay up into three or more segments in order to answer all three research questions. Next, I started to brainstorm personal experiences, and often found myself referencing past experiences in Writing and Rhetoric I from earlier in the semester. At this point I decided to make the foundation of my essay an analysis of past essays I’ve written in Writing and Rhetoric I, and how genre or subject affected my writing process. After writing my first body paragraph I began to consider the next research question: “Do different subjects or genres require different processes, and do some subjects make writing more difficult than other subjects do?”. Once again, I included my own experiences, but also considered how other writers react to different genres and subject. Finally, I decided it would provide contrast in my argument to discuss writers who’ve adapted to writing more than one genre. For this paragraph I researched authors Stephen King and Lisa See to understand how their writing process complements genres that are different from each other.
