Explanatory Essay (Discourse Essay)

Post-Essay Synthesis

In writing my discourse essay I utilized a variety of sources and recounted my own personal experiences to ensure that I was able to write an informative and unique paper. In my last essay, I felt that I needed more citations and evidence to support my topic, so I ensured that I included more quotes from texts such as Writing about Writing. Also, I made a greater effort to relate each of my body paragraphs to my thesis in order to have a stronger, synthesized essay.

I found that the community that I discussed, the Ratline, had many talking points and unique features that allowed me to make several interesting points and observations that would intrigue my audience. Therefore, I was able to include new information in each paragraph that I hadn’t previously discussed. I felt that I wasn’t repetitive in this essay. Ultimately, VMI’s Ratline is one of a kind and fit the criteria that a discourse community is required to meet, which allowed me to create multiple points and topics relating to my thesis.

Before beginning my essay, I was able to conduct an interview with my roommate, Jackson Miller. This interview helped broaden my perspective about the community which boosted my ability to discuss the topic. Also, the interview provided another objective perspective for the audience to interpret, which created a contrast with my opinions that were shared within the essay.

For my literacy narrative essay, I did not consult with Professor Smith about my paper. However, this time I took time to schedule a conference, which helped me adjust the shortcomings and mistakes within my essay. After my discussion with Professor Smith I was able to revise my paper and improve mistakes, such as connecting elements in my paragraphs with my thesis.
