The Creativity in the Process of Writing
Writing is something that can be compared to culture, as there are endless cultures and ways of life as well as endless different writing styles. Writing style is unique to every person, as there really is no one correct writing style. Everyone develops their own writing style whether it be from their discourse community influencing it, background, previous education, or other determining factors. Considering how diverse writing is, whatever your writing style may be, there are also endless ways to excel in your own style to make it appealing and understandable to any audience. Your writing style also determines your process of writing as in it determines the way you write papers and the process carried out. Writing can be considered an open book and the way you interpret it can be the determination on the writing style you develop.
Someone’s process of writing is the overall way a text is written, like how each paragraph is thought of and carried out. My writing process is rather spontaneous as brainstorming beforehand makes me overthink what I am writing about. It makes it easier to just think about it briefly before writing and then dive right into it. To begin the process, I try to write an intro that goes over everything I think I will be talking about. Although generally I have to go back and alter the introduction because I write about things completely different to my original plan. But the introduction is where I begin to zone out on what I am writing about and really become paralyzed in my own writing. In the introduction I try to keep everything brief as you don’t want to give away information that will be in the body paragraphs. I just give a brief look at what the body paragraphs are going to be based on. The introduction is where you get the audience hooked and interested on the writing. So a very important part of the introductions is including entertaining sentences that draw the reader in and make them want to read the rest of the writing.
When I get to the body paragraphs, I generally start to make more mistakes as it is like I am having a conversation in my head about the writing and typing everything I think. This is very helpful as it creates a lot of details, but it hurts because then I have to go back and correct all of the run on and fragment sentences. Zoning out in my writing is very effective though, as it allows me to open up in the text and include many comparisons and reflections. But also, it lets you bring life experiences and your past into the writing and talk about some things you aren’t comfortable saying out loud. This makes the process flow better as it lessens the chances of writer’s block when you are talking bringing yourself into the writing. My body paragraphs Is generally the chance to go into the most detail as possible. This is because when bring in examples and comparisons you have to add detail to make the audience better understand the topic. My process for writing body paragraphs mainly consists of stating an example and then going into detail and explaining it. The process is very similar to the brainstorming because everything is spontaneously written so that I don’t take breaks and stop the process of writing. This makes the body paragraphs flow together a lot better.
The conclusion is when you are coming to the end of the overall process, you have to bring everything together and make a brief statement on everything you went over in the writing. Not only are you bringing everything to a close, but you are making the last connection in the writing that will leave you audience with an informational ending. It can give the whole purpose of the writing all in one sentence connecting the entire paper to keep the flow going until the last sentence. It is very important to not mess up the flow of the paper in the conclusion going off topic or just word for word writing your introduction again. Although you should include things from the introduction, the entire conclusion should not be the exact same as the introduction.
Writer’s block is really what halts the entire writing process and can be the make or break moment for the writing. Writer’s block comes in many different forms, and all of which can determine the turnout of the writing. Writers block generally just comes from either running out of things to write about or becoming drained and losing your train of thought. Generally, when you run out of ideas it causes a break in the writing where it is pretty obvious that the flow alters. It is also hard to get back into the grove of writing once you stop and this makes it hard to simply finish off the paper as it becomes draining. Then you run into another form of writer’s block, which is being drained. This is generally cause in longer writings where it is hard to stay focused for an extended period. This generally makes for very bland writing and many mistakes to follow. As soon as a writer becomes drained, there is not much point in continuing to write in that state as that is when everything tends to go off topic and ruins the entire process of writing that has been followed throughout the writing. Another writing block that I experience is perfectionism. I always find myself stopping at conclusion sentences and with my thesis to make sure they are perfect. This interrupts my writing process when I could just fix everything after writing the paper. This goes along with another writing block being spell check and other forms of grammar assistance. This can be a significant writing block for someone who gets distracted by the lines popping up constantly when a word is misspelled or misused. This gets me out of the zone to go back and correct the word, and then I just lose my writing process and have to back-track to find where I was. But overall, the biggest writing block is distractions. They could be from not being in the correct writing environment or having a phone close by. Getting distracted will halt the writing process and could even stop the process until the next day. Not only is it hard to start back where you left off, but it can be hard to remember what you already wrote. Writing blocks have the largest negative effect on the writing process and can be the difference in good and bad writing.
The last step of the writing process is to go back through the paper and make corrections and ensure all tasks have been met. This step is the time to go back and re read to ensure that there are no small spelling or grammar errors. It Is also the time to go back and fix all run on or fragment sentences. Making corrections in the paper is one of the most important steps in the writing process as it can change around the flow the writing. If there are spelling errors and man confusing sentences, then the paper will have no flow. It can confuse the audience if the paper has these simple errors as they will pause and try to understand what the text is saying. But the process for making corrections is very simple. All I do is go through and read each paragraph slowly to ensure there are no spelling or grammatical errors. Then I ensure all the sentences flow together correctly and the paragraphs flow together. Making corrections in the writing is very important to the process as it can ruin the entire text if there are simple errors.
My writing process can be seen more in depth in previous papers. That being for example in the first college essay I wrote about my personal literacy (Maul 1). This was a chance for me to truly open up about my background and where my literacy was most likely developed from. With my writing process being described as more spontaneous and just writing what comes to mind, this essay is a perfect example of it. I wrote everything that came to mind about what influenced my literacy and connecting life experiences to it. In this essay I encountered no writing blocks as my flow was never interrupted from running out of ideas or becoming distracted. This is most likely because I was writing mainly about myself and my life experiences. This can be related to Rose’s text on how writers block is mainly from not opening up in your work and having rigid rules in your writing (Rose 158-173).
Writing as a process can be looked at in an endless number of ways. This is because writing process is an open book and allows writers to interpret it in their own way. After thinking of and writing about my writing process, it really opens the point of the process. Without a process of writing there would be nothing getting done. It would be like starting a new job with no training. You wouldn’t know what to do or where to start because there would be no directions or process. The writing process gives you directions on how to write and the way you should carry it out. And it is one of the simplest processes to develop as it Is all based on personal preference. Overall, my writing process could be considered spontaneous, as I think briefly about the prompt then get in the zone and don’t stop writing.
