Homework for 2/9

1.For college students, Web surfing or checking social media can be harmful because it causes you to waste so much study time. Once a already addicted teen starts looking at social media it is hard for them to stop because they want to know what the latest drama is on twitter, or Instagram. This is harmful academically because they don’t spend as much time studying. When they don’t spend enough time studying they try to cram assignments in before due dates and it becomes stressful for them to manage so much homework. Also, on the other spectrum it takes away from their time to do other stuff because they have to spend the free time they did have to study. I have personally felt the harmful effects of staying on the internet for too long. I get caught up in homework and it stresses me out and I end up staying up too late and not getting any sleep. I wake up in a bad mood the next morning and it is just a shit show for the rest of the day.
2. The warrant for this argument is wasting time is harmful for college students. Students always complain about how they are not prepared for a test or quiz, but the funny thing is the are tweeting it or posting about it. Which means they are on social media instead of studying. People tend to be more crabby in the morning and complain about not getting enough sleep because the are up late studying. This is due to the fact of how much time they probably spent reading social media posts or watching youtube videos.

Wall Video

Adam uses numbers to portray how the wall will not work and will be unnecessary to the united states because immigrants will still always find a way to get into the country. This is a one-sided argument because he only looks at the downsides of the wall and how it would not work. His tone is kind’ve aggressive which pushes people to believe he knows what he is talking about. He brings up how much the wall will cost and how high the tax would be on the people of the united states because of how much it will cost Americans to build the wall.

RGB In class writing Feb 2.

RGB’s argument was more of a multiple sided argument because she brought in what the opinion of her companions were during the trial of US vs. Virginia. She talked about the only person to be against women entering VMI, but was sympathetic to his argument because she understood that her son went to VMI and he may have a little bias. She brought up a case that involved a man that wanted to get an all woman’s nursing school to prove that she was right that a school can not be a single sex school. Also, she brought up how all the other academies (Navy, West Point, etc.. ) let women in their school besides fighting anyone. Since VMI has rich traditions, they tried to hold onto an all male school as long as they could. With the evidence she provided she was able to convince the people that VMI would be stronger and more versatile if women were able to attend.

Homework for Feb. 2nd

The picture that I most disagree with is figure 7.6 which depicts demonstrators trying to urge executive support of no more deportations. I understand that these people (illegal immigrants) are trying to make a life for themselves, but they also need to understand that we live here and pay taxes to our country. We have built this country from the ground up on hard work. In my opinion, I believe the gov’t should meet halfway between people that are respecting the united states and people that disobeying our laws. I believe there are modest people who are truly here to try and make a better life for their family, and want to do the most they can to become a citizen of our country. They may just have bad circumstances and are waiting for the right time to apply. On the other side of the spectrum there are people are break our laws and go against what our nation has set in place. These are the kind of people that we need to deport. We need to have a system that weeds out the wrong doers of the illegal immigrant party and send them away but try to help out the ones who are here for the right reasons. I am a strong believer that there are some men that have extroadinary circumstances and work their tails off to provide for their family and if this is what they have to do then by all means lets make all his hard work pay off. We claim to be a fair and just country so we should give honest hard working immigrants the right to be in our country.

The people in the photograph depicted seem to hold the ground that all deportation is wrong and immoral. This may be true in some cases, but not for people that are here with the intent of creating havoc in our society. I hold true to some of the values that the protestors in this picture are depicting, but I believe their are simpler and less aggressive approaches to getting their point across such as a petition or letters. Protesting only creates chaos and stress for those who have to say so in how the country it runs. For example, instead of going out and creating issues in public, have a meeting in which standout leaders conclude on an idea to try to influence their compromised views on the leadership of our country.

Homework for January 31st

Due to the maturity level of minors and the peer pressures of today’s society, the drinking age should remain at the age of twenty one. From experience, I have felt the overwhelming pressures to drink while underage. The pressures are everywhere and hard to avoid, and in today’s world, the only way to avoid it is to have a strong will power. Minors are programmed by today’s society that the only way to have fun is to party and drink while doing it. Even with the drinking age law, minors still find a way to get their hands on alcohol and if we lower the drinking age to eighteen then the gov’t is just asking for more issues. At the age of eighteen, minors are just now entering college and are about to encounter new challenges that is going to change their level of maturity. In those few years they have to become an adult it is important that they make the right choices and stay on course to graduate so they can start their life of right. Alcohol just gets in the way of things and leads people to make impulsive decisions.

Homework for January 25th

National Rifle Association

1. The angle of vision for this website/association is strongly based on military and marksmanship for sports such as hunting and rifle. Many pictures depicting military men, youth marksman and political powerhouses push the opinion that the NRA was created to give people safety guidelines for a activity/ sport they love. The degree of advocacy is that they are here for its members and they want to enjoy themselves and be able to feel safe with firearms and such. They push to free the world of Gun Control and push politically to elect politicians that are against gun control. They are on one side of the spectrum.

2.The NRA even has their own women leadership group that pushes to fight agasint the second amendment. The pictures depict elegant ladies that seem to be reasonable and not as much for shooting guns to make the organization more “appealing” to women.

3. The NRA try to depict why we have the second amendment that is for protection and sport play. They depict images of people that seem dependable, responsible and use GUNS for the right reasons. Not only do they have NRA as a political entity, but they have Gunsmithing Schools for job oppurtunities, law enforcement, youth programs, and business alliances. The NRA tries to reach all people from different values and believes and maturity levels.

4. There pathos of their argument could be described as pictures of elderly people who look like they are having a good time that don’t want to be bothered by Gun Control. The logos of the NRAs website can be seen in how they use political opinion to justify what they are all about. Lastly, the assumed ethos is they list the assumed fact that “Freedom” for our second amendment creates a safer world and happier people.

Gun Victim Action Council

1. This organization take a more subtle approach to Gun Control. Instead of portraying they are completely against Guns. They say things such as “We kindly as politicians to do the right thing” instead of demanding people vote for a candidate that will put strict Gun laws in place. This is an example of their angle of vision. To promote a safer place to live and prevent future gun violence. This degree of advocacy is seen through their approach to politicians. They are portrayed as more reasonable and more of asking instead of demanding.

2.They do not depict women as much in this, but instead address guns as an overall problem affecting everyone as a whole.

3.This organization is dedicated to the safety of people and preventing gun violence. These values are depicted in articles about incidence of people owning guns that should not be owning guns such as mentally ill individuals and people with a history of violence. They value everyone and their believes and urge people to see the potential violence that guns can cause.

4. The pathos of their cause is the heart wrenching stories of people being killed. The founder created this company after his son was killed by a man that owned a gun and was mentally ill. They use examples like this to again, show people the danger of a world without gun laws. The logos in this website is they use evidence to show people the logical thing to do and that is to push for “sane” gun laws. Ethos is kind hard to see because they push through reason and background stories from people that experience gun violence.

Minimum wage Arguments

Argument Onehttps://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/10/business/economy/national-minimum-wage-.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FMinimum%20Wage&action=click&contentCollection=timestopics&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=1&pgtype=collection&_r=0

This argument from the NY times is a published article that makes the argument that by increasing the minimum wage, we run the risk of destroying the job market for the poorer population. The author, Noam Scheiber, is a writer for the NY Times who was previously a writer for The New Republic that brings attention to the worlds most highlighted issues. His experience helps credit the work he does for the roanoke times as a writer. The audience that Scheiber is writing towards is meant for the politicians, the decision makers who are the decision makers on minimum wage, and people who are looking to understand the issue of minimum wages. There is no set issue that motivated this article, but rather the on going dispute in the economy about what the right wage is for “living”. In this article the author pushes more towards the persuasion side because even though he mentions the poor peoples’ views he tends to focus more on how raising the minimum wage will negatively economic flow. In the article, it describes how a test was run by John Horton of New York University that tested how much people were willing to take as their minimum wage. Employers that were linked to this test showed to higher people with a higher minimum wage offer because they believe those workers would be more productive rather than the people simply looking for a job.

Second Argument

This next argument is from the US Chamber of Commerce article that is authored by Dr. JD Foster, who is the vice president of the US chamber of commerce. He explores and explains global and national economic developments. The audience is mainly towards viewers interested in the opinion of other economists. Probably so they can yell at the screen and disagree with whatever their views are. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that a little less than half the states in the US have created a higher minimum wage. By doing this, Dr. Foster states that you are hurting smaller businesses that rely on workers such as marginal workers and teenagers.

“Reflecting on my Development as a Writer”

I have always been a successful writer in English classes as I have grown up, but never really cared that much about what I put into my papers. I would always do the bare minimum to get the A or B that I needed to make my parents happy. This was because I never truly understood the reason for writing and how it developed an individual at a personal level. In ERH 101, Major Garriott has made me see the importance of knowing what you are writing about and understand what you are trying to argue in your writing. She helped me realize that not only is writing just paper and pencil, but it is the basis for developing a strong rhetorical voice that I can use in everyday life. With the help of Major Garriott and her constructive criticism of my writing I was able to take what she said, tie it into my leadership literacy, and revise my papers so that I could learn from my mistakes and better develop valid, clear thesis statements.
When I started writing in college I quickly discovered that it was not the same as writing in high school. I could not get away with just writing a “good” paper. I realized I needed to write to the thesis questions provided and answer the questions in coherence to what I was trying to prove. For example, on my first paper I wrote to prove how National Geographic (Nat Geo) was a member of the discourse community of preventing animal poaching in Africa (Lythgoe). My first draft got a seventy and the reason being was that my thesis did not answer the questions Major Garriott wanted answered. Luckily, Major Garriott made some critical comments to my paper and I went to Laura Parsons, who is a writing tutor in the Virginia Military Institute Writing Center, and she helped me understand the comments my instructor made. My beginning thesis was, “In his story, “Special Investigation: Inside the Deadly Rhino Horn Trade,” Christy asserts a affiliations with the Discourse Community, or Activity System, of people looking to become enriched with the problems of today’s world, because the work agrees with the ideas of Donna Kain and Elizabeth Wardle, community motives that influence their objectives, specific tools to properly communicate to its members, and a social basis that constitutes the purpose of Christy’s article” (Lythgoe 1). In this thesis, I had the right idea about the discourse community, but I made an argument that was not valid. After help from Laura Parsons, she told me I needed to look at my sources as a piece of literature rather than what it actually is, a article. Through the help of Mrs. Parson’s teaching on how to view sources and Major Garriotts critical comments I was able to revise my paper a eighty-nine.
Another issue I had with writing papers was going off topic and writing unnecessary information. I would more so just write information that did not prove my argument just to take up space. For example, again in my first paper I wrote about the process of how poachers take rhino horns off of rhinos and that had nothing to do with how Nat Geo was a discourse community (Lythgoe 2). I was writing because I began having writers block. Through this I learned it is okay to have poor writing so that people can correct me and I can avoid making the same mistakes again. In my next two papers I wrote in Major Garriotts class I followed this same revision process of practically “puking on the page”, and then cleaning it up later. I learned that this is the best way to revise because I can learn different ways of writing through my instructor’s comments.
The reason I like this revision process is because it ties into a literacy that I care deeply about which is leadership. My high school football coach, Coach Harless, instilled in me that it is imperative that I learn from my mistakes in order to become a man and a better leader. This translates into my revision style as well in that I learn from my mistakes and become a better writer along the way. In high school, I never realized how leadership could tie into so many different literacies in my life. When I got to college Major Garriott helped me realize this because of how personable she was. She made herself available to her students so that she could make them the best writers they can. She herself displayed leadership qualities that in turn made me motivated to do better in my writing style. Throughout the semester I realized that my writing style continued to improve because on my last paper I went from a seventy-five to a ninety-three. I slowly improved the frames of my paper to put myself in a better position to prove my thesis.
During my early stages of college, I came in expecting writing to be much more complex and intrinsic than I expected. With the right teacher and tutors I was able to take what they told me, apply it to my leadership skills and become the writer I am today. My revision process was shaped around the way I build as a leader and that is by making mistakes and learning from them. Next semester I plan on furthering my leadership skills and my writing skills as I take on another one of Major Garriott’s courses.
