When understanding ‘global gender gap’ it is important to know that it is going to be different for different countries in different parts of the world. Overall, the global gender gap is the measurement of women and men in 4 categories which are health, education, economy, and politics. As mentioned above, each country holds diverse and constantly changing social structures that affectively alter their status on the global gender gap.
When looking into the gender gap report, Businessinsider.com they show their data from 2018 study that measurers the highest and lowest global gender gap in all the countries around the world. It shows Iceland with the lowest gap and Yemen with the highest gap.
The factors that contribute to this study and data shown above are health, education, economy, and politics. The factors that contribute for a country such as Iceland to be on top is the same 4 categories as mentioned before, health, education, economy, and politics. Iceland is on top for the simple reasoning that there is not much difference between men and women; it provides evidence that women have the same opportunity as well as success as men when receiving health benefits, achieving the same or higher education, receiving the same
pay, and are involved in their government system.
Looking at the United States and their ranking in the global gender gap, they rank 51st out of 149. The reasoning behind why they are not ranked higher on the list is because the United States does not put a lot of effort in giving women the same health care as men, the same goes for education, economy, and politics. The United States establish a uphill climb for women to get the same pay as men for doing the same job as well as challenging women when they are in a position to run for any type of public office. In order for the United States to improve their ranking in the global gender gap is just to simply focus and put more effort into giving women the same opportunity and equal chance for success in the United states such as equal health care, stabilize the wage gap, and provide equal chance for public office of any kind.
When women get pregnant, reproductive responsivities defiantly provide setbacks in their role sociality; their education or job can be put on hold when carrying a child and raising one but that is perfectly fine as long as that is their choice. This role that they take on when a woman gets pregnant is hard enough but the gender gap plays into this a lot because in most cases it is difficult for women to get proper maternity leave. So, for example it will become difficult for women to have a stable income while pregnant. Men’s responsibilities during this time is to fight for the maternity leave they disserve and if that is not an option then it is his job to do his best to provide for her and the child.
We can look into Yemen and some of the inequalities that women face inside the country we notice that they fail in all 4 categories of health, education, economy, and politics.Women don’t come close to having the same health care as men, they are not offered the same opportunity towards education, they face a harsh wage gape if they can even get a job in the first place, and cannot have a chance to hold public office. Which shows dramatically in their placement in the global gender gap rankings.
