Help Received: The Canterbury Tales – Chauncer
Character Analysis: The Ploughman
The Ploughman a humble man simply clothed in a smock and rode a simple mare. He was selfless in his actions, “he’d thrash, ditch, dig, and delve for all poormen and ask no hire”. In my opinion, this is an interesting action because in today’s time not many people are willing to serve others without compensation. He was a religious man who tithed and would do anything if he believed it would be an action of God. This raises a question, how could he be willing to live and do lowly tasks for everyone, without a guarantee of money? His life could be improved if he used his skills for profit, yet he ignores this and performs these deeds for good.
