Leadership Profile

My leadership style is one that seeks to inspire others. I try my best to lead with passion while being approachable. I try to build the rapport with others and show others my work ethic and make others want to work as well. My goal as a leader is inspire a person to do pursue their dreams out of passion. My strength is my ability to follow and strive for learning. I love to learn, and I observe others and want to learn from them no matter what rank or age. I learn from the good and bad. In the Emotional intelligence Survey one of my strengths is my ability to be self aware and self manage my emotions. Being self aware of your emotions means that you know what emotional state you are in. Self managing of ones emotions is when you are able to control and change your mood. The survey is on a scale from 1-6 with 1 being lower characteristics associated with the sub scale. I scored a 4.6 in self awareness of emotion which is slightly higher than the mean of other VMI students which is at 4.55. That means that I am similar to other cadets in their ability to be aware of their emotions. I scored a 4.71 in self-management of emotions which is higher than the average of 4.46. It is less than 1 SD away from the mean, however, it is still higher than the average. These are my leadership strengths because I am able to not get emotional when my followers are not listening to orders. Another one of my strengths lies in my ability to coach. In the Leadership Effectiveness and Adaptability Description Survey, coaching is defined as having high directing and high supporting of my followers. The survey is on a scale from 0-12 with the lower number being associated with lower characteristics of the sub scale. I scored a 9 in my coaching which 1 SD above the mean of 5.36. This is a strength because I am able to direct my followers while they still have the ability to act on their own. To test my authentic leadership capabilities, I took the Authentic Leadership Inventory. This test is used to for traits of authentic leadership like self-awareness, relational transparency, moral perspective, and balanced processing. The test is on a scale from 1-5 with 5 being indicating stronger evidence of authentic leadership traits. I got a score of 4.75 for moral perspective which is defined as the degree to which the leader sets standard for moral and ethical conduct. This is characteristic of me because I hold myself to the same standard that my followers are held too. For relational transparency, I got a score of 3.25, which is defined as the leaders openness to ideas and opinions. This is surprising to me because. I am consistently asking for feedback on my performance to learn from this those that came before me. (9)

My weakness as a leader is my ability to confront. Sometimes, I know something is wrong, however, sometimes I don’t tell them or confront them. In unfamiliar situations, I also tense up, and sometimes don’t know what to do. My weaknesses are shown in the Emotional Intelligence Survey in the management of others emotions. Management of others emotions is described as being able to control and damage the moods of others. The survey is on a scale from 1-6 with the lower number being lower characteristics associated with the sub scale. I scored a 3.71, which is 1 SD lower than the mean of 4.53. This means that I have a difficult time handling other people emotions compared to other cadets. Another weakness is shown in the Leadership Effectiveness and Adaptability Description Survey. The survey is on a scale from 0-12 with the lower number being associated with lower characteristics of the sub scale. I scored a 1 in direct and support which is 1 SD lower than the mean of 2.62 in directs and 2.99 in supports. Direct is defined as as heigh emphasis in direction of tasks and support is a low emphasis on direction and high is support of the task. This means that I struggle to command and support my followers. This is interesting because I am able to coach them. I also took the transformational leadership survey which measures the ability as a transformational leader. The scale is from 1-6 with the higher scores being associated with transformational leadership traits. For Idealized influence, I scored a 6, which is very high. Idealized influence is defined as behaviors that instill pride in followers and organizations. I agree with this because I lead by example and am very proud to have the opportunity to lead people. I scored a 3.7 on supportive leadership. Supportive leadership is defined as the ability to empathize with the followers and being approachable. This is my lowest score and I can understand why. I have trouble empathizing with others because we grew up in very different backgrounds. (0)
