Through analyzing the form and bibliographical presentation of these poems, I will attempt to characterize her original style, or at least the style she allowed to be published after being edited. Poems of this kind will include “Flowers- Well- If anybody,” “Nobody knows this little rose,” “Some keep the Sabbath going to church,” and several others published between 1850 and 1878. I will also subsequently reanalyze the edited, published versions of her poetry, comparing them with Dickinson’s idiosyncratic language, style, and overarching messages and themes. Following comparative analysis of Dickinson’s poems published during her lifetime and the edited versions by Todd and Higginson after her death, this project seeks to recognize and identify gender-specific approaches to editing in all of Dickinson’s poetry. My comparative close readings of the poems will model a careful, nuanced approach for contemporary readers of Dickinson’s poetry, demonstrating an awareness of her editors’ complex effects on her poetry.
