Power, Privilege, and Discourse

“Cultural literacy creates a discourse that seeks to minimize or eradicate difference,” and “no doubt, they can instill pride and a sense of identity within a group,” are two phrases found within ten lines of each other that seem to me to inherently different.

Eradicating differences in language or cultural language implies something universal. Instilling pride and a sense of identity, at the same time, seems impossible to do without narrowing in on specific characteristics. Identity comes from certain facets of a person, community, or culture that is specifically unique to that group. How it’s possible to both embrace identity while rejecting cultural differences is beyond me.
