The book of Genesis is about the creation of the world as humans came into being, so Steinberg used it to show the monumental affect that Barbie had on the world when she was created. She also brings in the other members of the “Barbie family” with Ken, Barbies best friend, and then the ethnic versions that were created. I believe that by choosing Genesis, something that numerous people are intimately familiar with, Steinberg was able to really tap into these people and really express just how large Barbie really is to the world and the impact she has on people from all walks of life. It was particularly effective how she shows that Barbie addresses racism, sexism, and even LGBT issues with the introduction of Ken and how no one can tell which sexual orientation he is. This way of arguing was particularly effective because it showed the growth from a simple idea to a massive multi-million dollar product in a relatively short period of time, just as humans are portrayed in the Bible. Barbie is a cultural staple of many a society and it is easy to see where her reach has been able to grow to.
