Zoonotic Infections

As the world has grown more and more connected and the population has grown, humans have needed more space so we have expanded more into previously unsettled areas. This has brought us into closer contact with animals who are reservoirs for disease. One major zoonotic disease of the last few years is the Zika virus. It appeared initially in Brazil and was considered a minor disease until it became apparent the damage it could do. It turned out to be an STI and it was causing birth defects, mainly microcephaly, in the children of women who had the disease. Zika is such a tough disease to stop because the mosquito that is the vector is as said in the movie, the cockroach of the mosquitoes.

Ebola is also another disease that has jumped in recent years from their reservoirs, monkeys, to humans. There was a breakout in 3 of the poorest African countries but was mainly focused in Zaire. It is spread through close physical contact and one of the customs is for the families to lay hands on someone who has died to send them on to the afterlife. This represents a problem for health officials because to help control the spread they had to convince people to give up hundreds or thousands of years of tradition. Eventually they managed to get a hold of it but it costs hundreds of lives but the outbreak was contained. As humans expand we will likely see more and more of these types of diseases.
