Journal Entry #8

I feel like a lot of people in that time in the Appalachia labor struggles were of the lower class. We all are fully aware that everything in this world cost money. Since they were of the lower class, it was obvious that they most likely could not afford everything. With all of these things they could not afford entertainment was one of these things. Music served as a form of entertainment, that could be afforded, and relaxation depending on what type of music it was. Music is also a good way to vent and to speak of all the things you’re dealing with because others could be dealing with the same thing. Today I feel like music has evolved a lot. Along with entertainment and speaking of struggles music is used to get across a message usually being about a current situation. One example that comes to mind in music is rapper, artist, and producer Kanye West. He sings a song where he talks about his everyday life and his work struggles. He says “I been working this grave shift, and I aint made shit”. He not only talks about his work struggles in work but racism, which is a major worldwide problem. He says “its broke nigga racism, don’t touch anything in the store. Its rich nigga racism, come and please buy more” in his song New Slaves. His music along with others speaks of these problems and other major problems in sort of a way that makes you think twice about what they said while using rhythm and beat to entertain those listeners.
