Journal Entry #3

I think that is hard for an outsider, like me, to this stereotype to give an actual critique of this issue. Though, I would say that it is humorous to a certain extent. I would say that these hillbilly products are a form of satire that is used to make like of a serious situation. I think that the level of satire of the situation depends highly upon how often it has been around (i.e. how much hurt has it put on how many people). As a definitive answer I would say that the production of these products is unacceptable. We saw in the YouTube (Blue eyes vs. Brown eyes) how these things, stereotypes and or racism is something that is taught at a very young age by many sources. We can also see how children are basically sponges of their environment at this age trying to develop their identity. When they see these things they are going to think they are reality. I don’t think that it is okay to purchase them. I think that the saying “treat others the way you would want to be treated”. I feel like if the tables were turned and it was a product that was a stereotype of you then you wouldn’t want that. Purchasing these products shows those that are making them that they are popular and therefor they will make more to accommodate popularity and we will see more and vice versa. I think that it’s not as bad when the insider purchases these products because they are the ones that determine if it’s hurtful or not. At the same time if they should not be offended if someone participates in any other part of this stereotype outside of products. Personally I don’t feel comfortable purchasing purely because of the fact that it hurts some people.
