Journal Entry #2

When searching these two terms I noticed images came up when I did a “web” search.  All of the images that I saw were of white men who were either wears bib overalls, missing teeth, or they were rocking the mullet haircut. For the most part I saw a lot of sources like Wikipedia, urbandictionary, and/or Webster trying to define these two terms. They defined them as “white”, live in “Mountains” or “Appalachia”, and “lacks education”. I opened a Wikipedia article and I saw the same thing that could either be considered derogatory and positive. It stated “who lives in the hills, has no means to speak of, dresses as he can, talks as he pleases, drinks whiskey when he gets it, and fires off his revolver as the fancy takes him”. I think one may see this as derogatory in the way that these people have no cares for anything and waste their time doing things that are not productive. One may view this in a positive way because the person is doing what they want and living a care free life that doesn’t depend so much on what others think. I think that you see these used in a condescending way by those don’t fit this stereotype, like people from highly populated areas. I also find it interesting how people sometimes embrace the phrase “redneck” by calling themselves one. It’s almost like they might be trying to take the power away from the authoritative figures that are assigning these stereotypes. I kind of see the term “hillbilly” and “redneck” as the same term. I think the only difference between the two is the time period that the two were used. Hillbilly is more of an old word while redneck is more modern.
