Journal Entry #6

First off I thought it was interesting how the Kentucky Cycle and Deliverance had a couple similarities. In the first scene of the play they tell about the interaction between Dragging Canoe and Michael. There was nothing that was going to stop Michael from trying to get the land. Dragging Canoe tried to tell him that the land was haunted but he did not listen. In the movie the movie one of the main characters, Lewis, reminded me a lot of Michael in the play. Nothing could stop him from going down to the river even when the locals told him the dangers that it offered. You can see that, as outsiders, both shared a quality of stubbornness. This subject matter because there are “two sides” and a divide and a serious of stereotypes circulating that can, have, and will hurt many people. I think the reason why Appalachian scholars are offended because they, as scholars, have put so much hard work and dedication into what they are doing that when they hear the stereotypes they might feel like they are overlooked and put into the negative Appalachian category no matter their accomplishments. This reminds me of my recruiting process when I was in high school. There are different areas where coaches go to recruit often (i.e. northern Virginia, Virginia beach area, and Richmond). I lived in southwest Virginia were football and football players were thought to be less competitive than those highly recruited areas. When I would go to recruiting camps we would run drills, do 1-on-1, and test in things like the 40. I was probably one of the best ones there. I overcame this stereotype just like the scholars of the Appalachia, being that the region is thought to be cut off.
