Prompt 2

I will be discussing the Montgomery and Frost articles. Montgomery focuses more on the actual language and dialect of English spoken in the Appalachia region. Whereas Frost focuses more on the description of the region in general. I feel like Frost and Montgomery would either get pretty heated in a discussion about the language and discourse from Appalachia, or they would have a nice calm discussion about the topic over a couple of beers at Brew Ridge Taps. For instance, Montgomery calls Frost out for being one of the most influential people in propagating the stereotype of mountain folk speaking Elizebethian English. Montgomery also states that travel writers spread that stereotype by writing travel papers saying that there are towns like that and even the state of North Carolina spreads it by having dictionaries of King’s English for sale at rest stops. He also goes on to say that some of the expressions used are found else where in the country such as the deep south. And I can attest to that. I’ve heard “holp, clumb, yonder, learn (instead of teach), afeard and many other words/expressions that I originally thought was bad English, but now know to be shakespearean expressions.
