Previously in my life I have come across rhetoric in most if not all of my English classes. I only usually know I am discussing rhetoric if I am told because I only have a hazy understanding of how to realize what rhetoric is. I am under the belief that words in general can be rhetoric so that would mean I encounter rhetoric on a daily basis. If Herrick believes that when people are trying to make or change opinion or talk to a certain set of people, then I would have encountered rhetoric when peers are trying to express their ideas or when a book is expressing ideas. I believe that teachers are using rhetoric but are not trying to persuade. On that note, I believe another characteristic of rhetoric would be to inspire learning. I agree that rhetoric must have guidelines to follow because a person, even if they are not trying to persuade must have their thoughts collected if they wish to write or speak, even slightly if it is a stream of consciousness.
