News #2

This News article I would talk about is “Congress says ‘BJP’s politics of hate responsible for Maniqur violence. This article talks about  The Congress Party have accused the BJP of promoting a “politics” that they claim is responsible for the recent incidents of the violence that happened in Maniqur. The Congress Party have been criticized the BJP for its divisive politics that have alleged the party for trying to polarize society for electoral gains. The Congress party has been demanding the BJP government take immediate action to restore peace and ensure people in Maniqur are safe. Recently, there have of clashes between different communities in Manipur, which resulted in the deaths of several people. The Congress party has accused the BJP of promoting divisive and inciting violence in the state. However, BJP has denied the accusations made by the Congress Party and has instead blamed the Congress Party for fomenting unrest in the state which they have accused the Congress Party of trying to create communal tension for political gain. The analysis I saw is the Congress Party’s accusations against the BJP of promoting divisive politics and inciting violence may be an attempt to gain a political advantage ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections in Manipur. I have also seen the accusations and counter-accusations made by the political parties in Manipur highlight the broader issue of divisive politics and have been used to identify politics in India which can lead to polarization and violence. This leads political parties in India to engage in heated accusations against their opponents in the lead-up to elections and the situation in Manipur is complex with multiple causes and factors. While reading this article, I think that the situation in Manipur is complex with the recent incidents of violence and the political tensions between the Congress Party and BJP which highlights the issue of divisive politics and the use of identity politics in India. I think it is important for political leaders to work towards finding common ground for the root causes of the violence in order to restore peace and ensure the safety of the people in Manipur. I also have questions like “Where is the evidence that supports the Congress Party’s accusing BJP of promoting “politics of hate” in Manipur, and where is the evidence to support BJP’s counter-accusation against the Congress Party?  How can the issue of divisive politics and the use of identified politics in India be effectively to addressed that can prevent polarization and violence?

Bangladesh Tweet

The tweet I have selected shows a woman who is being beaten for selling fruits in front of a mosque. The tweet states that the woman who is being hit is name Mirpur Dhaka, a poor Hindu women. The video shown in the tweet is quite sad to watch as the treatment of women in most South Asian countries is not very good. Dhaka is being hit by a man with what seems to be a stick of some sort for a couple seconds. Another noticeable part of the video in the tweet is how public the matter is. Dhaka is surrounded by a group of people that are observing the beat down. It’s a sad tweet to see but it serves as an example of how woman are treated in South Asian countries.

Sri Lanka Tweet

<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet” data-lang=”en” data-theme=”dark”><p lang=”en” dir=”ltr”>It is very sad that we Sri Lankans havent been able to let go of our cruel traditions. <br>A New Year Celebration &quot;game&quot; : Elephant Race <br>The participants are made to take part by force and torture held in chains and stabbed by bullhook. <a href=”https://t.co/88duwIrZou”>pic.twitter.com/88duwIrZou</a></p>&mdash; RARE Sri Lanka (@RARE_SriLanka) <a href=”https://twitter.com/RARE_SriLanka/status/1650743638950047750?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>April 25, 2023</a></blockquote> <script async src=”https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>

This tweet talks about the cruel New Year traditions that Sri Lanka continues to this day. The tradition is called elephant racing and it is when elephants are chained and hooked by stabbing so they can race. This is pure example of animal abuse because there harming and forcing the animal to engage in the historical tradition. The tweet condemns those who participated in the acts and wishes that fellow Sri Lankans “let go of our cruel traditions”

Oppression of Women’s Right to Choose

Within this tweet a Bangladeshi girl is depicted being chased and harassed by several men as she runs through a crowded building seeking shelter among several individuals. She is being grabbed and hit while running because she chose to wear a tube top and jeans out in the public. Those attacking her are claimed to be Muslim and stricter Bangladesh citizens as the dress code within Bangladesh for women is modesty, to cover oneself and to wear long loose fitting clothing. it is against the Muslim culture to almost completely cover their bodies with some sects having women completely cover themselves except for their eyes. The continued assault and oppression of women based on the religious boundaries of Islam and the culture of Bangladesh has been evident throughout the state as this is but one of the reported and documented cases of these attacks.

2nd News from Pakistan

This article discusses the devastating effects that the flood has had on the Pakistani people and the infrastructure within the country itself. It goes into depth on how much damage has been truly done to the country. It discusses how 218,000 houses have been destroyed and that it will take 10 billion dollars in order for the country to recovery from the flood in its entirety. I am aware that Pakistan continues to have an ever present and difficult economic crisis on their hands to deal with. I wonder how much this natural disaster hurts their chances of turning around their countries fate and fixing the economic issues. I also wonder if maybe the issue itself will help to unite the country and in turn help the political parties to work more in unison. This working in unison would allow for legislation and decision to be made quicker and in turn help to have a more definitive plan to deal with the issues that are facing Pakistan within its very near future

Apple Opens Its First Store in India

Shibani Joshi under #India posted a link to a Time.com article on the Apple Store that was opened in New Dehli. According to Apple’s CEO Tim Cook, India is very important to Apple and they are excited to provide for many Indians. This is very pleasant on the surface but on a deeper level it is most definitely going to be used to broaden Apple’s sphere of influence and accessibility to foreign markets.

Why is this important? Well on a positive note, India could use a technological boost in order to interconnect the people of India and raise media literacy rates. This coincides with some of the main points that we have discussed in the class about internet availability and technological availability amongst all people in India. However, does India need Apple to do all of this? With that being said, Apple smart phones are not a necessity, they are a commodity. People use their phone as a part of their social status. The Times article claims that the only people in India who are investing in new Iphones are those who have the disposable income to do so. This is a very blunt statement but it makes sense… Will a new Apple Store steer Indian people to spend their money unwisely or will it drive them into negative consumer based goals? I think that Tim Cook is wrong in trying to monopolize in India yet, the article claims that this is an attempt to outsource out of China which produces 90% of the worlds IPhones, this is a staggering statistic.

Deaths in Indian Sewers

“From March 22 to April 26, 2023, as many as eight people died while cleaning sewers in #Gujarat, raising concerns about the continuing deaths of manual scavengers despite the fact that the practice has been declared illegal across #India.”

This tweet provides a link to an article by TheHindu.com, essentially the Tweet summarizes that in India many sewage workers have been dying because they are manually cleaning out sewers without any sort of protective gear. The article claims that they mainly die due to asphyxiation because of poisonous gasses that are in the sewage systems in India. Both the article and the tweet states that this is an illegal practice.

I think that the overarching issue in this tweet is that the government has laws in place to prevent incidents like this from happening but does not have the reach or political influence in certain regions to enforce their regulations. I also believe that poverty and low education levels has a lot to do with this. Because many Indians are living in abject poverty, they are going to take any job that they get payed from even if it means risking their lives. In terms of education, the kind of people who are unfortunately taking these kinds of jobs are generally uneducated and don’t know about the risks of working in such unsanitary conditions. It is also very manipulative of the local governments to put people in these kinds of working conditions even after it was declared as illegal.

Umesh Pal murder: ‘Guddu Muslim an expert in disguising himself, could be living with a Hindu identity’

In this article from the Hindustan Times tells a story about a Guddu Muslim who in weeks past followed through on a terrorist attack involving crude bombs in Umesh Pal which killed a local lawyer. The suspected victim has been able to evade the police for the past two month, the Hindustan times claims that he has been able to do so because of his unique ability to disguise himself. They also claim that he may be disguised as a Hindu man. The rest of the article speaks about how the police have been tracking him down and reporting on the various potential locations where he could be hiding, disguised as a Hindu man.

I found this article to be quite comical, yes a muslim man was accused of doing a terrorist attack on innocent Indians and this is a proven fact. However, how can the police determine that he has been utilizing methods of disguising himself as a Hindu man? I think that this is just an excuse that the police are making for their inability to actually find the man they are looking for. This also probably has something to do with the media source that this article was found in. Yes, there is some truth and validity to the article yet upon further observation the Hindustan times appears to be a sensationalist low funding news outlet. So take it with a grain of salt.

Myanmar Developing into a Proxy War between US and China

This article follows the development of foreign intervention in the civil war in Myanmar. China has begun to take steps to extend a more substantial influence over the region, seemingly to counter US intervention after the recent National Defense Authorization Act and the Burmese Act. The NDAA and Burmese Act were aimed at supporting the resistance movements of the National Unity Government, the People’s Defense Forces and the various ethnic militant groups against a more technologically and materially superior military force of the junta. Now China is beginning to meet with junta leaders to balance out US influence. China’s interests lay beyond just balancing US interests, but to include Myanmar as a pathway to their access to the Indian Ocean, through investing in transportation infrastructure projects connecting China through Myanmar to the Indian Ocean.

The NUG guarantees no stability nor peace, which the Chinese government emphasizes to ensure their planned development for the region. If this is the case, is US and Chinese involvement prolonging this civil war and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis as Myanmar becomes a new battleground for a proxy war between the US and China? This may be a reality if either side country decides to become more involved in the conflict.

Gas Leaks in India

BBC News has reported on a mysterious gas leak in the Northern port city of Ludhiana, India. The article claims that there are 11 people dead as a result of the leak of the mysterious gas. Several locals in the area gave eyewitness accounts of people randomly falling unconscious in public after being exposed to the deadly gas. The article gives a brief remark from a local official who claims that the poison gas is most likely a product of a leaked chemical compound and the methane that is found in manholes. The BBC also reported that this is not the first time that there have been deaths in India resulting from mysterious gasses or chemical leaks, for example, “In 1984 a chemical leak in a pesticide plant at the central city of Bhopal killed thousands of people, in what is acknowledged to be the world’s worst industrial disaster.”

I found this article to be quite slim in information, this is most likely because either the Indian government is simply not acting or reporting on the situation or this kind of event is common in India. I feel as if it is a combination of both. Though this kind of issue may seem particular to developing countries like India, in The United States we have experienced even worse environmental disasters like the BP oil spill and the chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio. So as much as this seems a localized issue it may represent a broader issue of  industrial waste poisoning.
