Self Regulating Tech Industry in India

This article contains stories about multiple tech companies such as Snapchat, Google, Twitter, and some India based companies such as Koo and Sharechat pledge to begin campaigns against non-goverment related misinformation on their platforms. This follows a long history of misinformation in the Indian digital era. In addition to this the Indian government is moving to regulate more online gaming in order to stop illegal gambling and money laundering through internet games.

I believe that this article shows an improvement from the past of India’s digital competency. The part which specifically impresses me is the regulation steps taken to control online gambling operations. This shows a growing awareness for real world implications, outside of politics, from actions taken in the digital world. I wonder how this will effect the online economy of India and perhaps the types of games consumed?

India to Surpass China in world population

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-65380148

According to this article China will soon lose its spot as the most populous country on earth. This is significant as historically Asian nations have accounted for over a third of the world population in the last 70 years. While China’s population is on the decline India is projected to keep rising for the next several decades despite lower birth rates as compared to the 1950s.

I believe that this event is significant as India is already the world’s largest democracy and soon to be the world’s largest country. This means that it will have one more bargaining chip on the table and possibly more leverage in future negotiations within Asia and abroad. This amount of population I believe also shows the urgency in which India must learn to develop its digital footprint and competency. The prime minister of India right now, Modi, is a large advocate for technological innovation. Perhaps more private internet providers will see this change and be eager to work with him in order to strengthen the internet and cellular reach in India.

The Shepherd and the Wolf (A fable on the Punjab blackout)

A shepherd took his sheep out to pasture.
The Grass Green
The water Clean

Counting each head as they roamed the fields
One, Two, Three Four
His flock bore one more.

A wolf in sheep clothing among them walked
Though still on the prowl
He remained hidden, a silent growl

So the shepherd devised a plan to snuff him out
After today, he thought, the wolf will be no more
but other consequences, this action bore

Amongst his sheep he bound their mouths and his their eyes.
Blind, the wolfs hunt would be short
With no teeth, the wolf would have no retort

But the wolf hid from the shepherd still
He laid in the shadows to the east
Smiling as he knew his next feast

The flock grazed still unable to see or speak
So the wolf amongst them walked out
And none could tell the Shepherd, him about

Each of the flock one by one were killed
Their eyes never seeing
their mouths never warning

The shepherd who himself, this plan devised
Now stood with no sheep
and the wolf now on the outside

India Internet Blackout

This tweet is calling out the recent internet blackouts in Punjab. This is a highly Sikh centered state which is a large minority group in India. This type of persecution even has made its way into their religion as they have themselves a military force within the religion. This type blackout has been seen in India specifically during elections. Could this be done to cover up something in the province which the Indian government doesn’t want getting out?

US and India Make Tech and Weapons agreement to ween New Delhi off of Russian Reliance

https://www.ft.com/content/0fad1ae7-07f8-44cc-9df6-c8e2e03d404f

This Article explains a recent development between the world that we live in and the world we are studying in South Asia. Over the last few years India has been relying on Russia and the Kremlin to get its weapons to defend its boarders from China and Pakistan. This reliance is one which is dangerous to the US in this up and coming part in the world. This agreement included technology such as 5G, internet infrastructure, and other technological agreements. One of the parts of this agreement is a more open US policy for tech minds from India to be welcomed into the US to help the domestic production of crucial items such as semiconductors and computer chips. It will be extremely interesting to see the development of this partnership between these two different countries.
