The following tweet quoted the President of Myanmar’s government-in-hiding ‘National Unity Government’ (NUG) as a rallying speech for the new year, a call to rally all opposition to the junta against their regime to bring an end to their reign. The National Unity Government operates the “Peoples Defense Front”, a militia used to mount an armed resistance to the military junta on the seat of government. The tweet describes how this message was directed toward the “ethnic people” as the population of Myanmar consists of many different ethnic groups the military has accused of committing atrocities against. This is perhaps an attempt to build a stronger coalition of armed resistance which has been made up of different organizations often along ethnic lines. With the presence of a common tyrant, as well as the promises of better political representation and freedom from discrimination, this coalition of armed resistance would be much more successful. Since the military coup occurred two years ago, there has been a gradual paradigm shift of resistance from non-violent to armed resistance, so would the case of Myanmar be an antithesis to the reputation of non-violent resistance as a more successful form of resistance than violent resistance?

Tweet Translation:

National Unity Government. A message from Acting President Duwa Lashi La to the ethnic people.
2023 January (29)

“2023 is the year I believe that the time has come to dismantle the core of the military council. It is important to succeed in the battles in the Spring Revolution, and it is also necessary to succeed in the 6th Great Revolution…”
