During ancient times, the gender roles were defined. In many societies, mainly patrilineal, the male gender role was considered to be hunting, fishing, and providing for their families. The female gender roles in these societies were to be gatherers and too take care of the house and families. Some societies, matrilineal and equal societies, found gender roles to intertwine with each other, as everyone was a part of both the community and the home front.

As globalization has taken place, the female gender role has become much more broad, as has the male role. Both have began to intertwine together, specifically in recent years. While there are still many places that males have more rights and are expected to have different roles, females have gained much in recent years while they have been pushing for equality. In years to come, I believe that the genders will be very equal and not allow for gender discrimination in many societies.

The Mosuo culture in China is one of the very few matrilineal societies in the present world. Unlike many patrilineal cultures in present day, somewhere like Afghanistan or the rest of the Middle East, the Mosuo culture allows for equality for all people and everyone is in charge of providing for their family and community. However, females get to control that their partners are, although they believe in walking marriages. Even though these marriages are not for life, the female is still in charge of controlling whom they want as their partners.
