This semester has challenged me on my writing skill. I learned how to write more descriptive and how to better form my essays. Though this semester had posed a challenge to me, I still learned a strong foundation in writing. I greatly appreciate the opportunity I had with writing this year.
The first essay was a real challenge for me. It was a problem mainly because I never fully grasped the foundations of writing. But slowly as the semester went on, a light bulb appeared in my head and I started to learn the main foundations of writing. I learned how to address a certain audience and also how to slip in more detail, which made my writing more enjoyable to read. The first essay was hard because I wasn’t good at writing as a whole. Mainly because I never understood the structure or not adding enough detail, or even not using proper grammar.
This class challenge me in many ways that other classes wouldn’t. I say that because I have such a hard time writing good essays. I’d say that my biggest problem was not writing more descriptive. When writing, I usually just put down what come to mind immediately. It’s not good that I did that because it made my writing seem blander and not enjoyable for others to read. For example, in the first essay I wrote “As days went on, my writer’s block never go better”, and what I should have said was “as the days slowly went on, I never got over the hump with the writer’s block. I was still down at the bottom of the hill.” With the help of my teacher, I learned to write with more detail to make my writing seem more appealing. What I learned was that when writing in detail, It also makes the essay longer because of all the extra words need to make the essay a little bit better.
The main issue that I experience in this course is, again, not writing in enough detail. I never really got graded on the amount of detail in my papers in high school, which posed a huge problem for me this semester. With the lack of detail came shorter papers. What I figured out was that the more descriptive I was when writing, the longer my paper was. Sometimes I can be hard to try and find the right things to say within a paper to make it sound more appealing. The first essay that I got assigned in the beginning of the semester was probably the hardest for me. I say that because I had no idea how to even start the essay, let alone adding detail to it.
Another problem I encountered this semester was just forming the essay as a whole. Before this class, I couldn’t even form a proper thesis statement. I also couldn’t address my papers to a certain audience. As the semester went on, I slowly started to grasp writing to a specific audience and also essay structure. In high school, my English teachers never really taught us a proper way to write papers, which is one of the problems that caused me to struggle a little bit in the beginning of the semester. It slowly got easier to write papers because I was understanding how to write papers in the proper style. For example, again, I learned how to write with more detail, while also learning to make my essays longer.
Overall, I learned a lot this semester. This class has challenged me and made me work hard to hone my writing skills. The writing process is hard but I think I improved a lot since the beginning of the semester. That was my ultimate goal was just to improve my writing skills of this semester. I can say that I have definitely improved in my writing than from the beginning of the year.
