Lindemann explains the writing process and what that involves: pre writing, writing, and rewriting. I found it most interesting that he says this systematic examination and improvement of text can also be a social action. I had never thought of the writing process as a social action. This social action includes us asking questions and developing strategies for our own writing process. For example, when writing an essay, I often time take my first draft to my professor. They provide me with feedback and then I revise and edit.
Lindemann then goes on to say “Writing is a way of living in social groups, of interacting with others and having them interact with us” (pg.33).
However, can’t Writing be a private act as well? Early theories focused on writing as a private and individual act. Since the modern theories, writing has been focused on being a social act because it engages in a variety of social constituted systems.
I’ve alsways thought of writing as a private act until now. Going back to my earlier example of my own writing process, Lindemann would say that my process isn’t about what I write but how I manage prewriting, writing, and rewriting.
