For my fieldwork project I was hoping to help construct mile markers along the trial. Currently there are only mile markers in the first 3.5 miles for every half mile starting at Jordan’s point. This leaves the remainder of the trail uncounted for as well as the spaces in between each half mile. I have several concerns as well as suggestions regarding this. Many people do not start from Jordan’s point because the bridge is no longer in place. Therefore we should create color mile markers to indict Different start locations. Also, I believe the mile markers should be placed every quarter of a mile (.25 miles), that way runners and walkers have a better indication on how far they’re going. These markers are a key component to a runners workout. Without proper guidance on mileage, it could greatly effect a runners time, distance, and speed. I know there has been talk of linking the Chessie trail to other trails. If this occurs I think the idea of color coordinating the markers would be the best fit when trying to separate and distinguish the distances. When constructing my story, I’m going to look into the the history of trail running, the importance of mile markers, and the history of how and when the original mile markers were placed.
I’ve already made a list of possible resources I think would be the best fit for conducting my project. First, FOTC, I think they will be great with the history on how the first mile markers got there. I’m thinking about returning to W&L special collections to view maps on where the original bridges were located and the alternative routes for runners. I plan on interviewing local runners of the trail, those who use it frequently. I also want to interview a new runner on the trial during the 5k marathon.
I plan on emailing people such as, FOTC, head of VMI physical plant, and the project manager, all in order of who I believe would be most resourceful. I will meet with them all at least once given that as of right now I don’t see extended time being necessary.
My final writing project will consist of two parts. First will be the color coordinated mile markers along the whole trail. Second will be a link on the FOTC website, possibly linking it a blog or an Eportfolio for runners.
