Prompt 4 -Kincheloe

In Kincheloe’s article, I picked up a couple of possible arguments he’s trying to make. The first, is the idea that McDonald’s shaped American culture. In 1955, Ray Kroc opened McDonald’s, he attached the idea of an American Dream to the name and the products he sold. Kincheloe says that the company’s power generated from the use of media in this vision as well as the power the organization has now aquired to shape the lives of children. He points out that poltiocal power has shifted years ago from the police and military to spread ideas based of one’s culture. I believe this is something we see the exact opposite of today, in the year 2016. He then goes onto say that “Americans don’t talk much about power”. This country is built off of the want for more power. We constantly see on a daily bases, two companies fighting to be on top, Apple and Samsung, two “politicans” debating on whose the best fit, or even food chains like McDonalds, Wendy’s, and Burger King. Everything with Americans is a competition and a fight to be the best. However, this does not mean McDonald’s only means for reflecting on American culture is just a theory of power, but as previously mentioned it reflects the American Dream. McDonald’s is a representation of how infulences both social and cultural life effect children’s consciousness. This article can be linked to the Appalachian region with regards to its possible social and cultural influences as well. If the Appalachian regions were to combine with others, their way of life would be altered in more ways than one.
