After completing the 7 mintue video and the section 1.3 reading, I’m still pretty lost on the concept of how the enlightenment philosophy influence the ongoing debate about whether or not rhetoric is a skill or an art?
I found that in the reading conclusions make it difficult to categorize thoughts. Kant however, defines it as the attitude of coming to think for oneself. This expresses enlightenment as valuing individualism and self determination.
It further explains how enlightenment is characterized by a crisis of authority regarding any belief. I interpreted this as the debate on whether or not rhetoric is an art or a skill falls under anyone and with any belief.
