Conflict in Human Nature

Plato’s philosophy relies on reason and not sense to understand the world and its complexites, truths, virtures, and knowledge.

He describes the complexity of the the soul in three parts, stating that each of these parts pursues its own interest. Not only that, he says that these parts also struggle for control of thoughts and actions.

The first is the characteristic loves of each. He says that it is derived by wisdom and the philosophers soul is “governed” by this.

The second part loves nobility and honor. People typically with a militaristic mind is control by this.

Last is the appetite or lust loving part. Those that spend their lives pursuing pleasure fall in this category. They typically never get peace of mind or self control.
