My Path to Leadership & Leadership Growth
I became a leader in my most recent position by being the most qualified. When applying to be band clerk I used my previous experience from the ratline as well has high school experience to build prestige. The thing I have enjoyed most about being a leader is seeing the rats in band grow as individuals and as a cohesive unit. I struggle most with the monotony of the job and putting up with the rats. I learned that I as a person am much more resilient than I expected as well as my leadership requires me to be responsible for the actions of my peers.
Before being Clerk I was gardening club president. I got the job trough previous experience with the club. I enjoyed seeing the work I put it turn into fresh vegetables and flowers for pollinators over the course of a season. It was hard to be patient even after seeing the outcomes of the work time and again. As a person I grew to appreciate horticulture as a science and the finer parts of nature. As a leader I became much more patient than I previously would be.
Prior to becoming gardening club president I was the drum major of my marching band. As drum major it was enjoyable to work with different moving parts both related to and not related to performing. Things like moving equipment and and finding the right instrumentation for music were fun for me. From this experience I learned the importance of attention to detail and importance of timelines. The most important thing I learned about my leadership was that proficiency is necessary as a leader
As a leader I struggle most with being liked and mission accomplishment. Balancing those have been hard for me. I am not very organized. I enjoy presenting my ideas visually. When controlling emotions I ask myself “Is it warranted?” and “Is it worth it?” before allowing my emotions to control my actions. I do not express positive emotions well, as they are not within the prevue of my current position. I am afraid I will lead my followers astray. If they fail it will be my fault. From this course I would like to gain experience and knowledge on the theory of leadership as a science.
After furthering my leadership, I am still the most qualified. This course has introduced me the the theory of different leaderships styles. Some I like and have implemented, others I just understand more thoroughly. Through this experience I have gained perspective and insight into what makes certain leadership principles work. I have realized how I may have missed the mark a few times, and how I can improve.
