A CRITICAL RELFECTION: THE BRIDGE BETWEEN THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY AND POPULAR CULTURE
Looking at the final product of my essay, I am able to see that I had accomplished the goal in which I had set before beginning to write. I wanted to examine how popular culture creates accommodations to the “average person” who is interested in the scientific community. I had accomplished this goal by analyzing both an advanced scientific article and a Popular Science magazine, in which both were relating to the same topic. I illustrated how the Popular Science magazine “simplified” the highly advanced information that was present in the research article, in order to accommodate for the lack of knowledge the average individual may have on the topic because it is understood that the lack of knowledge does not mean a lack of interest.
This process had some faults, mostly due to the sheer amount of material that I had to comb through. Some mistakes included that I submitted far too much information in my drafts on paper, where this resulted in the included information decreasing in worth. Multiple examples relating to the exact same thing made my drafts boring. Some things I did well on, was trimming down my essay, selecting only parts that were highly related to my thesis, comparing the simplification of knowledge in the magazine and comparing it to the complexity of the research paper.
In conclusion, I managed to illustrate fully the purpose of my writing. Not only did I compare and contrast two versions of scientific pieces, but I also incorporated the differences between the publishers as well. By this I mean the backgrounds of both the writer for the Popular Science magazine and the Publishers of the research paper. Finally, I managed to cover the emotional and statistical content of each publication, and was able to demonstrate how one piece carried more emotional value than the other piece, which carried more statistical value.
