How is knowledge power? How does literacy and access to literacy play part in power? Who has the power?
Knowledge gives you the ability to be educated about a subject and in return be able to articulate that knowledge to get your opinion across on the subject. This gives you power because if you can convey your message or opinion in a powerful way, then you can get people to understand your purpose and then follow you.
What power do you have- or conversely, don’t have? How has that contributed to your literacy narrative?
I don’t have the power to articulate my message well through speech, mainly because of my presentation. I have always known I need to work on this work of articulating. I have improved a lot by just gaining vocabulary and general knowledge. But I need to get my mannerisms, as in fluidity, to where my speech is at, then I will be better off.
In “Superman and Me,” Alexie discusses the role Superman comic books played in his literacy. What texts and events were central to your learning- both positive and negative?
One text that negatively effected me was Harry Potter. The reason being that I opened you the book and tried to read it when I was in elementary school. I could barely read a word and got frustrated. From that point until high school I kind of just accepted that I was bad at reading. But overall I would say texts haven’t been my motivation ever, I have always been intrigued by men who were witty and well spoken. I knew that since I wanted that, I needed to read more and put more effort into english. And that is what I have done since high school and I am still working on it every day.
