Another model that we studied in class looked at the impact of the motivation of greed or grievance on the total number of rebellions in a given country.

If the members of a rebellious group are motivated solely by grievance they will not seek any economic benefit from rebellion, as their aim is to maximize the amount of rebellions they can have. This is modeled on the top graph where Total Cost=Total Benefit, and on the bottom graph where there is the maximum amount of rebellion.

If the members of a rebellious group are motivated by greed, they will seek to maximize the net benefit they receive, and not the number of rebellions that are conducted. This is seen on the top graph where there is the largest distance between the Total Benefit and Total Cost, as this is the area that maximizes Net Benefit. On the lower graph, notice that the number of rebellions is lower when people are motivated by greed rather than grievance.
