In the first blog post the author is arguing about the limitations of facebook. He is discussing the challenge of joining the UCLA facebook network. He was a graduate of UCLA, but no longer has a UCLA email address therefore facebook will not let him join the network. Facebook offers many networking opportunities, but also has to have standards to limit certain networks for example the UCLA one. The author Ian Bogost also includes an example of a woman who leaves a company on good terms to attend graduate school or work on a different job. This woman then joins facebook, and tries to join the business’s network, but is unable because she no longer has an appropriate email url to join. The author is providing example’s of how social media limits networks and connections when trying to maintain credibility. The media sites want to remain credible, and only want those who are qualified to be a part of certain networks. Which in turn can put limitations on certain situations. The author then goes on to make the claim at the end of the post that Facebook changes the ways in which we interact socially with others. Facebook and other social media sites serve as an extension of our interactions relating it to other modern technologies and how the change ways of life.
What are the limitations of using the wordpress blogs at VMI? Hard to find. The site is very limited in that they all start out the same. Exists only on the VMI network, unless it is exported. Does not always feel as user friendly.
What are the tangible and intangible benefits? Allows for a good amount of time. You can update posts, and change ideas or creations. Good structure in order to maintain organization. Can develop a sense of community with the VMI eportfolios.
