Clayton Thyne and Howard Sanborn – Educating Those Who Will Overthrow You – The Washington Post

This article really gives you something to think about. Essentially this article is saying the more educated someone is the more likely they are to want democracy. In many other countries college students are starting to protest and rally behind democracy.  Why is this?, the article attributes it to a couple things, the students have learned from their from their experiences and have gained a “political consciousness”. The Journal of Political Science believes that as more students enroll  at the primary and university level the greater chance an authoritarian government will transition into a democracy. I want to just strait up agree with this and say this is completely right and totally makes sense, but I feel as though I cant because that would be biased and I am looking at it from such a subjective lense. As a college educated member of a democratic society I think that democracy is one of the best forms of government that you can have. This judgement comes from studying the different forms of governments and pretty much only hearing negatives about every other form of governance. In reality though, I know that the democracy has many flaws and  I am sure could be critiqued harshly as well. So I think the right question to ask is what is is about democracy that attracts those that are educated? Is it democracy in itself that is just that better of a system, or are we taught in the educational setting democracy is best form of government. It will be interesting to see in the future if many authoritarian governments turn to democratic nations as a result of educating their people. This question does raise a tough decision for the rulers of these countries, do they watch the fall of their power, by doing what is best for everyone and continue to educate their people, or do they stop promoting education.
