This semester I did all of my planned immersion activities except going to the Spanish table. I did try to go to the Spanish table one time, but no one was there so I was discouraged from trying to go again.
I was able to watch TV in Spanish with Spanish subtitles and have partial comprehension of what was taking place. I could give a very basic summary after, but I would not consider it on the level of meeting my goal for this activity. I need to watch more TV and movies to have full comprehension so this is something I could spend more time on if I had to do this activity again for another class.
I listen to Spanish music on the regular now, just because I enjoy it. I do not always comprehend the lyrics first time I hear it, but after listening a couple times I can start to comprehend the song without looking at lyrics. I did improve on this throughout the semester at first I was not able to comprehend the songs without looking at the lyrics in Spanish and English, so I would consider it a success. Listening to music was one of my favorite activities that I did for my immersion activities. I think it helped me with interpretation and pronunciation, but I also think that there are other activities that were more helpful, like the BBC articles, just because those are conversation topics that would come up if I were trying to discus events, or politics with someone in Spanish speaking countries.
I think I did a lot better with the not having to look up so many words with my writing this semester. I really focused on trying to remember basic words that I am constantly using. I did still have to look up a lot of words, but I noticed I felt a lot more comfortable with verb tenses and grammar this semester. I know it was not perfect, but I found myself checking verb charts a lot less often this semester than in the pass.
I definitely failed the speaking communication parts of my goal because I was not speaking Spanish in conversation enough to improve and I was not practicing in order to get more comfortable and less nervous. In the future if I had to do this activity again I would focus on speaking activities almost exclusively. I cannot get better at speaking if I am too afraid to speak, so I really need to practice it more.
One thing I excelled on was my excitement to do my immersion activities, I started doing more than 2 hours a week sometime because I would sped hours just listening to music and I would read news articles in Spanish any chance that I got and it just became a part of my daily life. I just have to work on my anxiety with speaking which is something I will focus on in the future and something I would change if I were going to do this activity again.
