1:31 Digital Literacies- The Critics

Hick and Turner’s “No Longer a Luxury: Digital Literacy Cant Wait”, raises many questions concerning the relationship that school systems, as well as people in general, have with Digital Literacy. I found their criticism of how we are implementing digital literacy into our school systems both intriguing yet worrisome. They write about how the “Powerpoint Slides(60)” system of teaching, which every student knows and dreads, is becoming the same predictable “five paragraph(60)” system that students have traditionally been acquainted with.

The question that their concern prompts is how do we uses Digital Literacy to the fullest of its potential without it just becoming an evolved form of literature? Is that probably going to be its’ fate regardless? Will Digital Literacy thrust traditional literature out of the picture and it will be seen by future generations as a stone-man tool? As we encourage schools to promote digital discourse, I think we need to be mindful that we should explore all realms of digital literacy, encourage new thought, and teach students to build a new world from digital technology.
