Within this weeks readings by Maggard and Sohn, the topic of women within the region was highlighted. Maggard’s “Women in the Coal Mines” spoke about the difficulty that women faced trying to get equal treatment within a society where male workers were dominant. Women went on strikes for years trying to get equal rights and benefits that men were naturally born with. Likewise, Sohn talks about the difficulties of growing up female within the region. She suggests that males are expected to work so jobs are always readily available but for a female a college education is much more needed if she ever wish’s to get a job that pays more than “five dollars and hour”. Both of these female authors highlight the struggles that women have to face within the region in regards to finding jobs but also in regards to not losing their roots as well. Culture, language and voice should not be lost when trying to excel within society. Women should not have to give up themselves in order to find careers that allow them to feel fulfilled and be financially stable. The goal of both authors appears to be displaying women as being both capable of keeping their individuality as well as being able to make just as much money as their fellow male workers.
