Matewan and Deliverence are very different in their depiction of the mysterious region of Appalachia. Deliverance depicts the region as harsh, primitive, yet full of beauty- minus the people who are inbred inhabitants that are either childishly naïve and ignorant, or rapists. It is no surprise why many people from the region have a negative response to the movie due to how it depicts its natives. On the other hand, Matewan shows a region that, though struggling and facing hardship, is imbued with very human inhabitants who are struggling to survive. The people are also perceive in a much better light in the sense that they look average and have not been stereotyped to fit the many stereotypes of the region depicted within the movie Deliverance. Manipulated by big business in Matewan, the characters display very human attributes in their attempt to better their lives and survive the struggle. This is something that many people can relate to which is probably why it has a good reputation among its viewers. It depicts true aspects of the region, such as the coal industry and its dangers but in a way that encourages sympathy for the community and not disgust and fear.
