Prompt 7
Out-migration resulted in Appalachia as a result of many factors. For one, since there were limited jobs such as the coal industry, within much of the region, there were not as many jobs open that would please everyone in the same manner as living in a large city would. Small towns generally had one of two large businesses that much of the population worked. There was also a distinction among the classes and races. A poor non-white family would probably have a much harder time finding a job, especially since many jobs were very family, friend, and community related. Also since women didn’t work for a large span of time many men were forced to carry their families by themselves. In regard to race, if the majority of a town were racist that would probably lead to you having to move elsewhere in order to get a job because the population of people considered the “norm” of the community would outcast you. Since the south has a history of being racist especially towards African Americans, it makes sense why many people would have out-migrated from the region and went north especially in times were there were high racism and little work opportunities
