Movie Discussion: Current Issues

Men and women are surrounding by stereotypes that judge them and keep them confined in set boundaries. People fear change; they fear the gays, transgender, and everything different. They are set in stone and do not want to change their ways, when in reality we are advancing in the future and those old ways are stagnant.

The movie that we watched was called Guyland. This man is speaking to his audience, which is us about the topic of sex and gender. The problem at stake is children want to jump straight to adults they are just growing at an exceptional rate. They want to jump straight into life where things are better when in all reality its not. There are five demographic markers in someone’s life, finish and education, marriage, have a kid, get a job and move out of your parents house. These stages used to take very little time to complete now in the future they are taking years and years to do.

Women made gender visible to the world. They entered the work force and created job opportunities for themselves. With this they had to balance work and family, which created problems because men are usually the breadwinners but now women, were coming into that category. With all this power women feel entitled to pleasure, identity, work, family and intimacy. Women aren’t as masculine as men are, that is a man’s logic. They do not like any sissy stuff, they have to bring home a big paycheck, be reliable in a crisis, and be strong and sturdy. If not you are looked down on and you’re a wimp or gay. Guys throw the saying around of “that’s so gay” as a slang term to represent something that is dumb or they think is not right. Many men enter a fraternity to be in the “in crowd.” They are desperate to fit in and be independent from there parents. Rushing into a frat is supposedly the answer when in all reality a man who is a little older than them is just bossing around the boys. They do stupid things and get bullied but that is how you become a man and with this you get a brotherhood, which constitutes a notion of solidarity. The have a hierarchy of “bros before hoes.” This is there unbreakable bond that lasts through anything.

Men and women are imprisoned by society. They are placed in specific groups and expected to act within the parameters of the rules. College and fraternities and growing up are areas of exponential growth. This is where children should develop and see what life is for themselves. We just need to ask how we should consciously get through this stage of development and make the right choices.

The music that was played in the Appalachia region during labor struggles was an outlet to the workers. It was a way of relieving stress through song instead of violence. The men that worked in the mountains or the coalmines wrote songs about their work or accidents to expel their feelings instead of having to talk about them to other people. “There is even a folksong about this railroad that can be found in the collection…the song is full of unflattering references to the man who built it” (234). The men would write songs about their boss’s or there work days and how they were abused. The men would also write about how they weren’t paid enough and treated unfairly.

Music also played a key role later in the United States during the Civil Rights Movement. We have yet to come across this topic yet because during the movie we are watching about the coal mine wars, racism was pushed to the side due to the factor of Union fights. But music was a way of expressing one’s own self and a group. African Americans created songs to express how they felt about the movement; they created a way of coming together and expressing ideas and emotions.

I think music plays an important role in work because it is a way of communication. It is a way of brining individuals who do not know one other together under one roof or work place. People are free to speak their mind through hidden words or symbols; they can hide feelings and expressions through different figures of speech. The best part is that the owner’s or bosses do not know if the song is truly about them.

Tag: In this article you will read that men and women are looked at as inequalities but in truth they are equal. Women are better in some senses and men are better at others, but just because men are bigger and stronger doesn’t mean that they are any better then women.

In retrospect when you look at men and women you would think that men are better because they are bigger and stronger and faster, but in all reality women have the dominant life expectancy. Men are the submissive sex, while women are the dominant sex.

There are many factors that relate to health and disease differences among men vs. women some of them are culture norms, income differences, biological makeups, and women’s longer life expectancy. These factors influence the gender health gap. For health and illness men and women are different. Women will treat themselves and try to handle it without help from doctors but men will go and seek medical assistance right away. Men are usually more prone to life threatening diseases such as cancer, heart disease, etc. Women aren’t as vulnerable to life threatening diseases due to the fact that they bear children and go through physiological stress during pregnant. In the United States it is true the men do make more because the government doesn’t think that women are as good as men or suitable as men are. But in all reality we have women who hold high-end positions in the government and in the military women are being paid the same wages and are now being treated as equal to men.

Gender norms such as masculinity can influence behavior in males such as athletics. Men think that since they are stronger and faster that they are greater at sports and everything else. Long ago women were not allowed to play sports because of funding and health reasons but in all honesty I think it was due to the fact of women not being as good as men. But soon that all changed and now there is equality in sports.

Men are not the type to go ask for help because of there masculinity. They fear that if they reach out for help that they will be seen as weak and pathetic. With this men fear of going to health clinics they would rather just go without and “tough it out.” This is not how men should feel, if they need help with illness or health care they should seek it out not hid in fear.

Gender transformative interventions can be described as approaches that seek to transform gender roles and provide more stable relationships between men and women. These programs try to prevent the men and boys from being judged or harassed.

Ballard states that, “The real fool is the deluded one who believes the image-not the one who gets the joke and carries it home.” He is trying to get across that it okay to have these souvenirs in your home as long as you do not believe the joke and carry it on with you. I completely agree with her, I think that yes you can indulge in the surroundings and all the little knick-knacks but if you get the joke and stereotype and can walk away without taking it with you then you are okay. But if you are someone who buys the knick-knacks and keeps them in your office and jokes about them and spreads rumors then you are the real fool and you are the one who needs to rethink life. Ballard points out, “When we laugh at this hillbilly fool, we laugh at ourselves.” This statement is true because we think that these people are inferior to us and that these hillbilly folk are dumb or stupid. We think that we are so much better than them when in reality we are not.

Capp states, “Li’l Abner leads us to see such contradictions in human nature as our tendency to trust people, but to doubt appearances; to live freely, but occasionally to oppress others.” This statement clarifies it all. We as people like to judge others based on their looks and what they do at the time we see them or their occupation. But we like to say that we don’t because we want people to believe that we are kind. But in all reality we are cold hearted, manipulative jerks who judge and critique everyone. I personally would not buy those souvenirs. I think that when you buy a product like that you are biting into the stereotype and giving it more cause then it needs. Yes I get the joke about it all but I do not carry it around with me or take it home. I do not buy the products because I have no need for them in my life.

Artifact 4: Third Gender 2

Tag: In this essay you will see that there are more than just two genders. It is not just male and female there are third genders and intersex’s. The hijra are a type of third gender in India who have crossed the social boundaries of society.

The film that we watched the other day in class really expanded my view on gender. We learned from the film Middle Sexes that there is more than just male and female. There is a third gender, which can be defined, as both or neither.

Gender binary is a way of drawing a line in the sand between the two genders. It is a social boundary that usually discourages people from crossing over from male to female or vies versa. Bathrooms can usually display this; in the US we have separate rooms for each gender. Usually if you step out of the enclosed boundaries you are judged and crucified. Many people do not know what to do with transgender people so they take away their rights to even use the bathroom in public. They are publicly humiliated and sent to court to settle a bathroom incident. Honestly I don’t see the problem just let the damn kid use the freaking bathroom.

Third gender can be defined as someone who is not defined by male or female but identified by the society. Countries that recognize third genders are Australia, Germany, India, Japan, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, and Thailand. Also the Middle East, Asia- Pacific, Europe, Africa, and Latin America.

The Hijra of India is known as transgender, from male to female. They are neither completely male nor female. They usually work as a prostitute on the street and have sex with heterosexual men who are married. They keep their sex lives on the down low because they do not want to be seen as gay or not with their wife. The life of a hijra is hard, they are seen as low class in society, they are belittled and abused in public and no one usually does anything to help them.

The differences on sex and gender after considering this module have changed some. I see gender as a wider variety of literary terms now. I now know that many other countries recognize transgender and intersex people than I thought. They accept it at a greater rate then the US. The US is full of judgmental ass holes that need to have power and have it their way; this is the main reason why the United States lags. We just care too much about everything and can never leave anything alone or let people be who they want to be.

The interests of the people that actually live in Appalachia are not being served justice. They are portrayed as illiterate, violent, rude people that are isolated from society. But in all reality they are not isolated or illiterate they are just like every other society minus a few implications. “Appalachia even before the modern era of coal mining and industrialization was not more economically isolated…the persistent belief in Appalachian distinctiveness thus results from a persistent way of writing about the mountain region rather than from the regions actual past” (Back Talk). The chapters that we have read throughout the book have served the people outside of Appalachia’s interests. They have to depict apart the mountain people to make themselves look good. The people that write about Appalachia people do not live there nor have they ever experienced life there, they create images of reality that they think correlates to the “actual” experience. It was important for these writers to portray the region this way because they need to be seen as the supieor. They have to be seen as the one who conquered the land and did it.

The people on the outside have an advancing society while in the mountains they are not necessarily cut off from society they just choose to interact among themselves. The Appalachian people have built their lives on what they have. They’ve used their resources without much outside help, and when people come in and belittle them and say they are below them it is sad and pathetic. The people on the outside do this for themselves, they are selfish and cocky and do not portray them right.

Reflective tag for artifact #3

Tag: Looking from the inside out, the United States is not as enticing as people may think. We do not rank among the top countries because we do not exploit our resources properly. This article will display the top five countries, the US and a third world country, Chad. It will dive into certain statistics about different categories on the Global Gender Gap Index.

Artifact 3: Global Gender Gap

The United States is not as great as everyone thinks it is. It is ranked 28 on the Global Gender Gap Index. It is ranked 33 out of 179 on the State of the World’s Mothers.

The Global Gender Gap is a way of measuring countries on how well they are using their resources between male and female populations. On the global gender gap index Iceland ranks number 1, Norway ranks number 2, Finland is ranked number 3, Sweden ranks number 4, and rounding out the top is Ireland. These countries rank among the top because they are equal in how they treat men and women. These countries use their resources well and disperse work among the genders to have equal results. Iceland is ranked first because it has overall great scores, they have a literacy rate of .93 and a primary education rate of .92. They lack very little in politics but they have a score of .27 for women in parliament, which is more than most countries. These countries have diverse roles for women and men it is not domintaly run by one gender and with this fact that allows them to score higher on the index.

The United States does not rank among the top partially because we do not have consistency like the other countries. We are run by power hungry individuals who are in it for themselves and do not care about the good of the people. We also do not disperse our resources among the genders as well as other countries. We have a score of .94 for education and health but a score of .2 for women in parliament. This is where the US struggles. We have no diversity in politics, men run it and overall that is killing the United State’s score on the Global Gender Gap Index. Some things that the United States could do to improve their score is allow more slots for women in politics. This would create diversification in parliament and a higher score. We can also

The bottom of the index is mostly made up of third world countries that do not have many resources to use. They live in poor communities with poor health and not enough food to go around. These countries that make up the bottom of the index do not have the tools they need to treat there ill or young. Chad is ranked 142 out of 145 on the index. This is a third world country that lacks in many resources. They have a .18 in politics and women in parliament. They have a high score in health of 1.02 for life expectancy but lack in education with a literacy rate of .66. Chad has many people that live there but not enough resources to take care of all those people. They do not have advanced technology like the top five ranked countries have, and this is a reason why they are ranked so low. With women getting pregnant in societies this hinders them from work, a chance to get an income. This is a blessing and a curse because having a child is life’s greatest gift but it can lead to gaps in gender equality. Usually women have to stop working to care for children or even have the child this takes jobs away from females and lowers scores on the index.

Artifact 2: Gender and Culture

Tag: Women and men all around the world comes from different cultures that not everyone understands. Different cultures have different kinships like matrilineal where it comes from the female side of the family, or patrilineal where it all comes from the men, finally bilateral, which are equal opportunities for both men and women. You will read that India is an unfair society where women are seen as subordinate unlike the other two kinships.

The culture that I was given to identify was the Hindu culture of India. India is an agricultural society that has mainly rural villages, they have little or no formal mode of education, and they are without contact of the national government. The kinship of the Hindu culture is patrilineal, which is tracing descent through the male line, but this only came about in the 19th century. It was not always like this, I do not know the exact reason for the change in kinship.

The gender roles of the Hindu culture in India are weighted heavily toward the males. The men are the head of the households and basically own the family, house, and land. He supplies the family with food from his land that is produced or he goes to town to purchase the food for the family. The men have the right to beat their wives and the right to the marriage. They normally neglect the daughters or beat them or starve them by insufficient feeding. The men have also started to use technology to hurt there daughters instead of help them. This is what frustrates me because why use technology which is suppose to help people and turn it against the daughters. It is frustrating to see innocent children murdered and not given a chance to live. I know this isn’t my culture but I would hope that they would go away from this. But since they are so far out of touch with government and no one is there to enforce the rules they just continue on with what has been in there culture for years.

The women in this society are seen as submissive without much power. The women only achieve status or power if they partake in agriculture and work. The women do house hold duties, take care of the children, and do domestic tasks. Female daughters are treated well in the family only if the mother holds a high status; with this they receive the same opportunities as the boys in education and religion. But on the other hand many female children born go through infanticide, this is when they will purposefully kill the daughters at a young age. It is because the father does not want a daughter in the family because they are seen as weak. Many females who are born and live that get sick or injured will just be left to die and suffer because the family is so individualistic. Most infanticide occurs in the wealthy families, which is interesting because they have more money to care for a daughter unlike the poorer parts of India.

Within the United States the culture is completely different. We have a bilateral culture, which is equality between the men and the women. Women are given equally opportunities as the men unlike in India. It is seen that men and women both take care of the house and bring in a paycheck to support the family not just the male. Yes females aren’t treated as well as men are in the job field but they do have way more opportunities than those in India. The true matrilineal culture of the Mosuo of China has a working society that invites people to be apart of. They are a happy group of people who live away from society in a dynamic environment. The women run everything and have multiple lovers. They choose who they want to love and spend the night with them and if the women wants the man to stay he stays the morning if not she sends him away. They women are allowed to dabble in many relationships to experiment with men. They have to give up their old lives to enter this society, which is a risk but hopefully pays off. It is not like the patrilineal society where men own everything and have all the power. The women have the sole power and use it wisely they do not beat anyone nor take advantage of anyone either. It is a dynamic flowing society that gives women the opportunity to live the way they want and choose who they want to love.
