Ballard states that, “The real fool is the deluded one who believes the image-not the one who gets the joke and carries it home.” He is trying to get across that it okay to have these souvenirs in your home as long as you do not believe the joke and carry it on with you. I completely agree with her, I think that yes you can indulge in the surroundings and all the little knick-knacks but if you get the joke and stereotype and can walk away without taking it with you then you are okay. But if you are someone who buys the knick-knacks and keeps them in your office and jokes about them and spreads rumors then you are the real fool and you are the one who needs to rethink life. Ballard points out, “When we laugh at this hillbilly fool, we laugh at ourselves.” This statement is true because we think that these people are inferior to us and that these hillbilly folk are dumb or stupid. We think that we are so much better than them when in reality we are not.
Capp states, “Li’l Abner leads us to see such contradictions in human nature as our tendency to trust people, but to doubt appearances; to live freely, but occasionally to oppress others.” This statement clarifies it all. We as people like to judge others based on their looks and what they do at the time we see them or their occupation. But we like to say that we don’t because we want people to believe that we are kind. But in all reality we are cold hearted, manipulative jerks who judge and critique everyone. I personally would not buy those souvenirs. I think that when you buy a product like that you are biting into the stereotype and giving it more cause then it needs. Yes I get the joke about it all but I do not carry it around with me or take it home. I do not buy the products because I have no need for them in my life.
