1.1 Introduction
In today’s world, we are more connected than ever before. We live in a world where communication is almost instant, regardless of distance. As such, people from different parts of our world are able to express their ideas, opinions and cultures. Throughout the course of the History of IT, I have learned an expansive amount of information about information technologies and how human beings communicate through technology. For most of my papers, I focused on the United States as the target culture/civilization (with the exception of the first paper) and how their technology allowed them to better communicate and grow as a civilization. However, just because America was the sole civilization analysed, the ideas expressed in the papers can be used to analyze other civilizations as well such as China or the United Kingdom; basically any first world country. My ePortfolio was very helpful in assisting me in organizing my papers and posting them to see my progress from drafts to final products. This allowed me to better refine my ideas into something worth reading. Beginning with smoke signals and going all the way to the Internet and the use of social media, information technology has impacted human beings more so than any other technological advancement. The most important of those in that range of technological progress were the written communications, transportation methods, information processing technology and the subsequent effect these technologies had on people and how people evolved these technologies.
1.2 Written Communications
Written communication was the most basic information technology but perhaps the most important because it had several impacts on information technology progression and the technological progress of mankind. For this paper, the target culture as that of the Chinese. Written communication began early in China. Originally, written communication was used for prophecy and religious purposes. These were known as Oracle Bones (Artifact 1). The Chinese would use bronze or wood to put their writing on. Though the material that the Chinese (and other cultures) used to inscribe their writings on changed, the idea that thoughts and knowledge needed to be written down or preserved for memory did not. I learned that the Chinese language and writing system went through many eras and changes. I also observed that writing communication in general originated from religious uses but also was reserved for only the economic/cultural elite causing a class system to occur. Learning to read and write was also a major factor for government and political figures.
1.3 The Rise of the Airplane
After written communications, I shifted the scope of my focus to transportation methods. The most prominent and important transportation technology was the airplane. For this paper, I assessed the impact airplane technology had on the United States. The airplane became the most useful transportation method in the 20th century. The most obvious was that it made transportation to and from places much faster and more efficient (Artifact 2). Having to contend with the newly formed railroad system in the United States, the U.S. government saw fit to use airlines to transport mail (Artifact 2). The need for faster communication was the cause of the airplane’s popularity and continued improvement. The airplane was the most useful transportation technology the United States ever created. Its greatest impact on the U.S and the world was militarily. Beginning with World War I, planes were used to great effect causing much death (Artifact 2). They were then used in World War II with even greater effect. This was around the time the first jet engine would be created, opening up a new world of military power and transportation.
1.4 Just Google It
As time progressed, so too did information technology. Where as written communication was the first and most basic form of information technology, Google is one of the most advanced. Google is a search engine used on the Internet (a network of connected servers that display information using HTML hyperlinks and web pages). It was created by two Stanford students and is now a billion dollar company/global IPO. Google works with web crawling technology. Web crawlers are special software robots that build lists of words found on websites as well as indexing the links found on pages (Artifact 3). This is how it matches it with what the user types in the search bar. This technology has impacted academic research and finding general knowledge about anything by making it easier than ever before. Gone are the days of having to go to a public library to find a book on a topic or read an encyclopedia.
1.5 How Technology Has Impacted Mankind
Technology (specifically information technology) has an immense impact on people. Starting with written communication, it allowed people to write down and remember knowledge. It revolutionized many different factors in human society such as economy, religion, and free speech. It allowed for the advancement of economic growth because people were able to write down words, which led to the idea of currency. It started with religion but further advanced it. For example, Martin Luther and the 95 theses wouldn’t be possible. And with the invention of the word press (which was possible due to written communication), it allowed news and information to be spread affecting free speech. The next technology I observed to have a great impact on mankind was the airplane. Besides making transportation better, faster, and allowing people to travel further, the airplane was responsible for the deaths of millions via war. Equipped with bombs and weapons, it was used to burn and destroy cities and people. Finally, Google has made connecting to people and gathering knowledge fast and easy. Any piece of information we wish to know is now at our fingertips.
1.7 Conclusion
Technology is ever changing and ever growing. Information technology has come a long way from nomads just settling down and writing on stone tablets and bones. We have progressed to an age where technology allows for constant and instaneous communication. Transportation technology has played just as pivotal role in the evolution of information technology and communication amongst humans as other technologies have. The airplane allowed for faster travel and communication via mail. Then came the Internet age. The Internet brought with it many technological advances such as Google. Google has allowed us to essentially know anything and everything we want. This furthered communication as well because anything on the Internet came from someone’s thought or idea and he or she posted it. Over the course of this semester, I have looked at how information technology and transportation technology has influenced and evolved different cultures – specifically the Chinese and Americans. Through ePortfolio, I was able to refine my ideas across all papers to really see how information technology has affected the world. Finally, I was able to determine how information technology allowed for the betterment of communication by studying the technologies past, present, and future.
