For my final project I am deciding to rhetorically analyze a speech. The speech was presented by Stuart Scott during the 2014 ESPYS, and he was accepting the Jimmy V Perseverance Award. This award is a big deal so Scott had to come up with a speech, and since this was a big deal and the ESPYS is nationally broadcasted one could say Scott prepared his speech using epideictic rhetoric. The epideictic is what I am looking to analyze. Since it is a ceremonial situation, what strategies, rhetorical appeals, and other ways he was able to connect and communicate with his audience. I am going to go in-depth how the speaker established his credibility with the audience and how he maintains that credibility through out the whole speech. Then I will also talk about how his emotions affected the deliverance of this speech and what it does to the audience. How the speaker’s emotions affected the audience and how the audiences reaction shaped the speech more, because now the audience has been pulled into the speech and are invested in what’s going. Furthering the development of the speech I will also see how logical his points are and that he makes sense, because if the speech is not logical and pertinent about what is going on then the speech has no effect. By evaluating and analyzing this speech picking apart the different appeals I can then find the exigence and figure out why this speech needs rhetoric planning and execution.
