Reading over Plato’s Gorgias, i have come to make a questions from the text. First in Gorgias, Socrates argues what being an orator truly is, and how he is trying to grasp the concept from Gorgias. But, Gorgias says that every profession basically has its orator perspective, but yet it is still not orator. Oratory is making people capable of speaking, be wise of what they speak about and being concerned with speeches. In the text Gorgias states that all jobs have this component but it is not considered oratory, its just part of whatever job they might be doing. How is that possible when oratory deals with speech and the knowledge of what you are talking about but yet you are not considered an orator? It just did not make sense the way Gorgias was responding to Socrates’ justifiable questions as it can be classified as one thing but yet not at the same time. I also question as to how the definition of oratory seems to change. On page 6 they say oratory is concerned with speeches, making people capable of speaking and being wise in what they speak about, but, on page 49 they say oratory is used to defend the injustice. How can those two concepts go hand in hand?
