Science became less about conjecture and more about strict empirical evidence. Rhetoric is persuasive speaking. In order to be persuasive, you need to be able to prove your point. That requires evidence. In modern science, nothing is conclusive until there is enough evidence. Even then, subjects are still debated with great enthusiasm.
